South Dakota State University Northeast Research Farm to Host Field Day July 14

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State University Northeast Research Farm will host its annual field day on Thursday, July 14, at 4:30 p.m. CDT.

“The Northeast Research Farm field day is a great opportunity for our producers and stakeholders in the northeast region of South Dakota to learn about various research and Extension projects conducted by SDSU faculty and staff,” said David Karki, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist.

This year’s event is sponsored by the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association, South Dakota Wheat Commission and South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council.

The tours will run continuously, each lasting an hour. The field day will include a meal provided by sponsors.

Between tours Connie Tande, SDSU Extension Plant Diagnostician, will be available to discuss plant sample issues and identification of pests or field problems.

The Northeast Research Farm is located 2.5 miles west of Interstate 29 off exit 193 (South Shore exit) at 15710 455 Ave. South Shore, SD 57263.

Field Tour Descriptions

Tour 1: Weed Management

  • Paul O. Johnson, SDSU Extension Weed Management Coordinator, will talk on how pre-emergent herbicides worked in this very wet and late spring year and discuss weed management strategies in the glyphosate-resistant weed period, like dicamba, Enlist and GT 27 beans.

Tour 2: Corn Fertility

  • Jason Clark, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Soil Fertility Specialist, and Peter Kovacs, Assistant Professor Agronomy, will speak on starter fertilizer management in corn.
  • It will feature nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium use in corn.

Tour 3: Insects and Oats

  • Adam Varenhorst, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Field Crop Entomologist, will cover insect problems in soybeans and wheat.
  • David Karki, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist, will cover information on oats.

Tour 4: Soybean Fertility and Biological Agronomy

  • Jonathan Kleinjan, SDSU Extension Agronomist, will cover soybean fertility.
  • Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist, will give a talk on biological agronomy.
