4-H Outdoor Education

The term ‘outdoor education’ refers to a wide range of experiential education in, for, and about the outdoors. SDSU Extension 4-H proudly offers many opportunities for youth to engage in outdoor education across the state. Outdoor education experiences range from single events to year-long programs for youth in South Dakota. Additionally, curriculum resources are available for educators or club leaders who wish to bring outdoor education to the youth they work with.

4-H hosts three key outdoor education programs to provide youth the chance to engage in what interests them most. 4-H Camps are generally 3-4 day overnight camps where youth can partake in experiential learning with new friends from across the state. OWLS is a program for senior 4-H members who wish to challenge themselves a bit more. Participants in the OWLS program are engaged in year-round outdoor education learning through webinars and campouts, with a final capstone experience to test their skills. Finally, ETHICS SD engages youth in a comprehensive furbearer education program designed to provide foundational knowledge to grow the next generation of trappers.
