As of June 30, 2025, the labeled uses for chlorpyrifos products for food and feed are limited to alfalfa, soybean, and wheat (spring and winter) in South Dakota. Chlorpyrifos can no longer be used to treat sunflowers. This change was part of a regulatory amendment approved on September 30, 2024, which revoked all but 11 food and feed uses of chlorpyrifos.

The new regulation stipulates that all existing stocks of chlorpyrifos products with canceled or amended labels cannot be sold or used after June 30, 2025, regardless of intended use. Existing stocks should be stored according to label instructions until they can be properly disposed of. The SDSU Extension resource, Managing Waste Pesticides: Restricted Use Pesticides, provides instructions on how to handle waste pesticides and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources' Waste Management in South Dakota page provides information on what qualifies as and where and how to dispose of waste pesticide product(s).

You can find the full details of this ruling, including the 11 approved regional uses and a list of products that have been canceled or amended, in the EPA’s resource, Frequently Asked Questions about the Current Status of Chlorpyrifos and Anticipated Path Forward. As always, you must read and comply with all label instructions
