International Farm Transition Network - Understanding Farm Succession Planning through a Readiness Lens

Tuesday, September 30

SDSU Extension and the International Farm Transition Network (IFTN) will hold an online training session on September 30, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. CDT.

Farm succession planning is often delayed, which puts both business continuity and family well-being at risk. This session presents findings from recent research with Alberta farm operators and their families that explored the barriers and motivators to starting the succession process. Participants will learn about the top priorities identified by producers when considering succession and the types of resources they believed would be most useful. The session will also introduce the Farm Succession Readiness Framework, a practical tool developed from this research to help identify different levels of planning readiness and guide more effective engagement strategies.

Rebecca Purc-Stephenson, PhD, is an Applied Social Psychologist and professor at the University of Alberta's Augustana Campus. She studies stressors and resilience in rural and farming communities, turning research into practical programs to support the mental health and well-being of those working in the agricultural industry. She is the provincial lead researcher of the Agricultural Wellbeing in Alberta (AgWellAB) program.
