Palmer amaranth and kochia continue to spread across western South Dakota. Their growing resistance to multiple herbicide groups threatens the long-term sustainability of crop production systems in the region. This workshop is designed to help farmers understand the biology that drives these weeds’ success, evaluate current chemical control strategies, and explore alternative management options for resilient, on-farm weed control.

Agenda

  • 12:00 p.m. MT — Lunch (Chili Feed)
  • 12:40 p.m. — Program Introduction
  • 12:45 p.m. — Biology and Ecology of Palmer amaranth: Eric Jones, SDSU Extension Weed Management Specialist
  • 1:35 p.m. — Break
  • 1:50 p.m. — Herbicide Control Strategies & Field Experiences: Nevin Lawrence, University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension
  • 2:40 p.m. — General Discussion and Q&A: Jeremiah Phelps, SD Ag & Natural Resources Weed and Pest Program Specialist
  • 3:00 p.m. — Adjourn

This educational session will provide practical, research-based information to support weed management decisions, especially in areas already experiencing or at high risk for resistant populations. Producers will have the opportunity to engage directly with regional weed science experts and discuss approaches suited to the unique challenges of western South Dakota.
