Keep Moving This Holiday Season

As we transition into the busy holiday season and the beautiful fall weather behind, it can be challenging to stay active. However, staying physically active during the winter months is just as important as any other time of the year. In fact, being physically active has many benefits that might be needed even more during the busy holiday season, including reduced feelings of stress, improved quality of sleep, improved strength of our immune system, and help maintaining a healthy weight.

Each week, even during the holidays, adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity.

Tips to Avoid the Holiday Exercise Pitfalls

  • Avoid using cold weather as an excuse not to get outside and be active. Check out the following information in Physical Activity and Cold Weather for ways to safely dress in preparation to exercise in the cold. Remember, be mindful of dangerous and extreme conditions so you can move your workout outside if needed.
  • When traveling during the holidays, try packing resistance bands, small weights, or a jump rope with you.
  • Your daily routine may get shaken up with a busy holiday schedule. Try planning ahead and splitting up your physical activity so you are still able to get it in! Instead of your normal 30-minute walk over lunch, you may have to split it up into 5 or 10-minute sessions.
  • If you are looking for a new family tradition, consider starting an active family event such as a walk, relay, or sledding event that everyone can take participate in.
  • If you prefer to workout with others, try and find a family member or friend to be your “fitness buddy” during the holiday season. Meet up or send regular communication to each other to stay accountable.
  • Make every bit count! If you’re having trouble finding time, incorporate physical activity into everything you do. Try walking a bit faster while getting groceries, walk around the block when getting the mail, or do a few squats while cooking.
  • The holidays can be a great time to relax from the stress of work and unwind with family and remember physical activity can also be a good way to do this as well. Avoid using the holidays as an excuse to miss your normal physical activity.
