BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is hosting a 2025 seasonal activity challenge called Spring Into Step to encourage physical activity.
Spring Into Step is a virtual physical activity challenge for all South Dakotans that will last the entire month of May. It is free to participate, but registration is required. To register, visit extension.sdstate.edu/events and search “spring”.
Participants will track their minutes of physical activity each day in May and submit those minutes at the end of the challenge. All participants will receive a small thank you and the top achievers will receive an additional prize. Remaining participants will be entered into a drawing for a prize, as well.
Throughout the month, participants will receive additional support, including weekly encouragement emails and ideas for activity to keep them moving.
Erin Hallenbeck, SDSU Extension Health and Physical Activity Field Specialist, said physical activity is important for overall health and this is the perfect time of year to start adding in more outdoor activities.
She also pointed to research that shows accountability helps people achieve goals and encourages people to sign up with friends. Physical activity can include everyday activities like walking, gardening, dancing or cleaning. For beginners, Hallenbeck said even small lifestyle choices can lead to big changes
“Our goal is to help make South Dakota healthier, and that starts with the individual,” she said. “Anything that gets you moving counts toward this challenge.”
