BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is inviting the public to join its virtual 5K, and to register for the 605 Igniting Change event.
The virtual 5K can be completed any time during the week of July 5-11, 2026. Registration is free, and available by visiting the SDSU Extension Events page and searching “5K”.
Registrants will receive an optional four-week walking or running program to help them prepare for the event, and weekly encouragement and reminder emails. Those who successfully complete the 5K during the event week and submit their results will receive a free gift.
Erin Hallenbeck, SDSU Extension Health and Physical Activity Field Specialist, said this event is a great way for those who joined the Spring Activity Challenge to keep the momentum going.
“The virtual 5K felt like a great way to celebrate participants’ progress, get more people to join in, and encourage everyone to stay active and engaged in the months ahead,” Hallenbeck said.
She said having a goal, like completing a 5K (which is 3.1 miles) is a good way to stay motivated. People can run, walk or do a combination of both. Hallenbeck stressed speed isn’t the point, and everyone can participate at their own pace.
“It doesn’t matter how fast you go. What matters is that you keep moving forward and do what feels right for you,” she said.
She also encourages people to join the SDSU Extension 605 Igniting Change Virtual event on July 10, 2026, which is also Chronic Disease Awareness Day. It marks part of the events observing July as Chronic Disease Awareness Month in South Dakota, proclaimed by Gov. Larry Rhoden.
July is Chronic Disease Awareness Month, and the webinar will provide education and information on small changes that can support long-term health and well-being, as well as learning practical strategies for managing and preventing chronic disease.
It is free to attend, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “chronic”.
