Environmental Training for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)

SDSU Extension will host an environmental training session for operators of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) on June 23 at the Crossroads Convention Center (100 Fourth St. S.W., Huron, SD 57350).

This current training program meets the training requirement of the 2017 General Water Pollution Control Permit for CAFOs. If producers haven’t attended a training since July 2017, they’ll need to attend in order to be in compliance with the General Permit. Besides producers, it is encouraged that manure applicators, policy makers, County Commissioners, Zoning Board members, and concerned citizens attend since everyone can benefit from the information shared.

  • 9:30 a.m. – Livestock Nutrition Options for Altering Content of Manure: Rafe Royall, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Swine Specialist
  • 10:15 a.m. – Break
  • 10:30 a.m. – South Dakota DANR Livestock Permit Program: Jason Roggow, Natural Resources Engineer for the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • 12:00 p.m. – Lunch
  • 1:00 p.m. – Soil Erosion and Infiltration Demonstration: Kent Vlieger, Soil Health Specialist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
  • 1:40 p.m. – Land Application of Manure - Nitrogen & Phosphorus Management: Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist
  • 2:40 p.m. – Land Application of Manure Worksheets: Jason Gilb, Conservation Agronomist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
  • 2:50 p.m. – Break
  • 3:05 p.m. – Air Quality and Odor: Bob Thaler, Distinguished Professor & SDSU Extension Swine Specialist
  • 4:00 p.m. – Complete training evaluations and receive certificates

Registration

Registration is required by June 19 and can be completed using the blue register button above. To cover the cost of the event, registration is $50 for the first person from a farm or operation and includes lunch, breaks and training materials. Additional participants from the farm/operation can register for $50 to receive a binder or $25 for attendance only without additional binders.
