SDSU Extension offers on-site livestock water testing services at 39 locations across the state.

Water is the most important nutrient to all livestock animals. Poor quality water can have a negative effect on growth, reproduction, health and general productivity of the animal. In some cases, death could occur within days or hours after consumption of contaminated waters or water deprivation. Therefore, continuous monitoring of water quality and quantity are important to maintain a productive livestock program.

It’s never too early to start testing your water. Your animals' health should not be an indicator of water quality. Testing is the only way to be sure because even clear water can be of poor quality.

Step 1 - Collect your water sample
Water samples must be collected in a clean plastic or glass container such as water or pop bottles, jelly jars, etc.

Step 2 - Call your local drop-off location to make arrangements to drop off your sample.

Step 3 - We will provide results
A quick test is conducted free of charge with an electro-conductivity (EC) meter to determine total salts in the water. After your results have been reviewed by an SDSU Extension field or state specialist, additional laboratory testing may be suggested but will be at the cost of the producer.
