4-H Shooting Sports

The 4-H Shooting Sports program develops safe shooting habits in youth ages 8-19. Students practice under the guidance of certified instructors and coaches who have received over 15 hours of training in the areas of safety, techniques, coaching and youth development.

SDSU Extension 4-H youth win 1st place at 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships

South Dakota State University Extension 4-H youth who competed at the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships this year once again scored exceptionally well, including a first-place finish by Caden Chelmo of Brule County and the air pistol team.

2026 Hunting Team Application Deadline

SDSU Extension 4-H is accepting applications for the 2026 Hunting Skills team that will compete at the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska June 21-June 26, 2026.

4-H Shooting Sports Hall of Fame Honorees

The 4-H Shooting Sports Hall of Fame was started in 2015. It was created to recognize those who played a role in bringing shooting sports to the South Dakota 4-H Program and those who have helped it to grow on the state and regional levels.

Shooting sports driving growth in SDSU Extension 4-H program

Though not a new 4-H program, SDSU Extension 4-H Shooting Sports has seen a steady uptick in interest in recent years. In 2023, the team saw one of its best showings at the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships with a third-place finish in the team sweepstakes award. And they’re itching to go back.

Thirty-five youth representing South Dakota State University Extension 4-H competed at the national championships from June 24-28 in Grand Island, Nebraska. The annual competition drew 708 youth from 40 states to demonstrate their abilities in archery and shooting across multiple disciplines.
