BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota 4-H, a program of South Dakota State University Extension, is pleased to welcome Karen Gardner as a new SDSU Extension 4-H Shooting Sports and Outdoor Education Field Specialist.
In her role, Gardner will coordinate shooting sports training for volunteers and instructors, while also supporting coaches and instructors throughout the state. She will also develop 4-H outdoor education programs and lead 4-H summer camps. She is based in Rapid City.
“I am excited to join 4-H in this role because the program already has such a positive impact on young people in South Dakota,” Gardner said. “I look forward to supporting current programs while also helping to grow and build ones for the future.”
A native of Warsaw, Indiana, Gardner has worked with youth in Indiana, North Carolina and Brookings, South Dakota. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Indiana Wesleyan University, and a master’s in educational psychology from Ball State University.
“South Dakota has always felt like where we belong, and I am so thankful to be a part of this work here,” Gardner said.
Her prior work experience includes teaching various elementary grade levels, including kindergarten, second grade, fourth to sixth grade high ability, and sixth grade English language arts. She also has served as a sports and recreation director, arts and crafts director, and teen counselor leadership mentor at various summer camps.
“Karen brings a wealth of experience in formal and informal education, with a strong focus on outdoor education, positive youth development and collaborative partnerships,” said Rosie Nold, assistant dean and Director of Global Agricultural Leadership and SDSU Extension Interim 4-H Program Director. “Her expertise, enthusiasm and commitment to empowering young people make her an excellent addition to the South Dakota 4-H team, and we are excited to welcome her aboard.”
