SDSU Extension 2025 Garden Hour series starts May 6

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension’s popular webinar series for gardeners, Garden Hour, will kick off on May 6, 2025.

Led by the SDSU Extension horticulture team, the webinar features short, topical presentations every week during the growing season and every other month during the off-season.

The regular season weekly series starts at 7 p.m. CDT every Tuesday, May 6 through Aug. 26. Is it free to join, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “garden”. One signup will register participants for the entire series. Confirmation Zoom links and reminders will be emailed.

Gardening enthusiasts of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. Master Gardeners can also receive continuing education credit for attending the live sessions.

To kick off this season’s series, Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension State Climatologist, will provide a spring climate update and John Ball, professor, SDSU Extension Forestry Specialist and South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Forest Health Specialist, will talk about early-season tree care.

Amanda Bachmann, SDSU Extension Urban Entomology Field Specialist, said Garden Hour will continue to be a great way for aspiring and experienced gardeners to learn new information and have access to experts when they have questions.

“This is a great resource to get a crash course on how to be successful in whatever you’re growing – flowers, trees, vegetables, et cetera,” Bachmann said. “It is also a way to hear from SDSU Extension experts on a regular basis about what is happening, not just in your own yard or garden but across the state.”

For those who can’t attend live, recordings will be published on the SDSU Extension YouTube channel. This year, there will also be written recaps of each episode posted on extension.sdstate.edu.

People can also submit questions any time via the Ask Extension widget or by contacting the Garden Hotline nearest them via the Problems and Solutions page.

“We have many avenues for people to get advice and help from SDSU Extension,” Bachmann said.

To receive regular updates and the latest resources on gardening and landscaping, South Dakotans are also encouraged to subscribe to SDSU Extension's bi-weekly Garden and Yard newsletter at the newsletter page. South Dakotans are also welcome to visit the SDSU Extension Garden and Yard Problems and Solutions page for additional resources and contact information.
