The Basis Report mobile app brings the power of the SDSU Basis Report web tool directly to your phone or tablet. Available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play, the app provides real-time grain basis bids from elevators across South Dakota — giving farmers and agricultural stakeholders immediate access to the information they need, wherever they are.
Basis represents the difference between the cash price paid for grain locally and the nearby futures price. Variations in basis can be attributed to shifts in local supply and demand or changes in transportation costs. A narrowing basis often signals increased local demand, reduced supply, or lower transportation costs, while a widening basis may reflect diminished demand, increased supply, or higher transportation costs. Understanding basis is essential for managing price risk and timing grain sales.
App Features
Live Grain Basis Bids
View up-to-date cash grain basis bids from elevators across South Dakota for four commodities — Corn, Soybeans, Hard Red Spring Wheat, and Hard Red Winter Wheat (Figure 1). Bids are updated in real time so you always have the latest market information at your fingertips.
Interactive Maps
The app’s map view lets users compare basis bids by location across the state (Figure 2). Elevator locations are plotted on a map, making it easy to identify regional patterns and find competitive bids near you. Maps can be filtered by crop type and time period, providing insights into geographic basis fluctuations across South Dakota.
Basis Trend Charts
Built-in charts allow users to track historical basis trends for corn and soybeans across South Dakota crop reporting districts (Figure 3). Dynamic dropdown menus let users filter by district and time range, helping farmers and market observers make informed marketing decisions. Historical data can also be downloaded as CSV files directly within the app.
