BROOKINGS, S.D. – Registration is now open for the 2026 Purposeful Retirement Online Book Club, hosted by South Dakota State University Extension and North Dakota State University Extension.
This interactive series invites participants to engage in meaningful conversations inspired by the book, “Purposeful Retirement: How to Bring Happiness and Meaning to Your Retirement” by Hyrum W. Smith.
It is free to participate. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “retirement”. Space is limited and registration will close on Sept. 1, 2026. Each participant is responsible for getting their own copy of the book.
The book club will meet every other Wednesday for six sessions, beginning Sept. 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. CDT / 9 a.m. MT via Zoom. Scheduled meeting dates are Sept. 9 and 23, Oct. 7 and 21, and Nov. 4 and 18, 2026.
Each session features guided discussions designed to help participants reflect on their perspectives about retirement, explore the connection between purpose and overall well-being, and discover practical ways to align personal values with retirement goals.
“This book club provides a unique opportunity to pause and consider what truly matters as we plan for the future,” said Leacey Brown, SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialist. “Participants of all ages bring valuable perspectives, and the conversations continue to be both insightful and inspiring.”
