Attend the X-Disease in South Dakota Field Day on Monday, July 20, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. MT at the West River Research and Extension Center.

The field day is open to the general public that is interested in identification and management of X-Disease Phytoplasma (XDP) in chokecherries, peaches, cherries, and other stone fruit. The event will begin at the West River Research and Extension Center classroom with a lecture during the first part of the morning. It will continue with a driving field trip to identify XDP in locations in the Black Hills (attendees are responsible for own their transportation).

Recent reports of seemingly millions of very small insects moving around on driveways and around homes was the result of a springtail population boom. Springtails typically become a nuisance during drought conditions or saturating rains.

West Nile Virus Update: July 2, 2026

On June 15, 2026, the South Dakota Department of Health released a press release that the first West Nile Virus positive pool of mosquitos was detected in Brown County. Although much of the state is still experiencing drought, recent heavy rains will promote already active mosquito populations.
