SDSU Extension and the International Farm Transition Network (IFTN) will hold an online training session on March May 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. CDT.
When a successor joins the family business, there are many possibilities for their involvement. Often the focus is on operational training - getting them involved in the day-to-day function of the business. However, is the successor welcome and invited to the management and advisory table? In this interactive session we will consider the value of including the successor in management and advisory conversations as soon as possible and the risks of waiting too long.
Presenter
Patti Durand, based in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada grew up in a family business near Teulon, Manitoba. She has been a Professional Agrologist for almost 3 decades. Her career has included agriculture, marketing and finance, while managing businesses alongside her husband Larry. Her book, The Future Leader, draws on the many lessons she observed while coaching and facilitating hundreds of family business conversations. Patti has often wondered, "What if people started preparing for leadership earlier and were encouraged to lead the process?" Patti works to answer this question through her business, Brightrack Consulting, splitting time between coaching, speaking, workshop leading and collaborating with other professionals to improve and invent the tools for business families.
