Schedule

  • April 13: “Exploring the Value of Wildflowers for Grazing Nutrition”
Kaylee Wheeler, SDSU Extension Range Field Specialist, will explore the value of wildflowers for grazing nutrition. Wildflowers are key sources of protein, energy, and minerals for livestock, often providing higher nutrition levels than grasses. Wildflowers also contribute to the overall health of rangelands by supporting soil health, increasing drought resiliency, and by providing wildlife and pollinator habitat. Participants will learn actual feed values of wildflowers and practical management strategies for retaining and improving plant diversity.
  • April 20: "Applying Soil Health Principles to Rangeland”
Krista Ehlert, Associate Professor & SDSU Extension Range Specialist, will interpret the principles of soil health and how to leverage those to apply on grassland ecosystems. Healthy soils create healthy plant life and increase forage production while building grasslands that are more resilient to invasive species, natural disaster, and drought conditions. Participants will learn practical strategies that they can take home to the ranch to intentionally manage their soil health and consequently plan for drought conditions.
  • April 27: “Bad Water: Big Impacts on Livestock”
Robin Salverson, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist will share the misconceptions in the neighborhood about livestock water quality.  Believing these misconceptions can have a big impact on livestock production and health. During this 1-hour webinar, Salverson will be debunking these misconceptions.
