SDSU Extension will host a Wisdom Writing Workshop on September 24 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. CDT at the Lake County Museum (221 NE 8th St, Madison, SD 57042).

Through guided writing activities and thoughtful discussion, participants will explore the growth, wisdom, and perspective that come with aging. The workshop also highlights how writing can support coping during challenging times. Participants of all ages and backgrounds are invited to join to reflect on the rich experiences that shape us over time.

Together, we'll explore the evolving science and soul of aging, including the powerful concept of gerotranscendence—a theory that views aging not as decline, but as a deepening of insight and connection. Through personal storytelling and shared discovery, participants will uncover the often-overlooked strengths and inner wisdom that come with lived experience.

Whether you're navigating your own aging process, supporting a loved one, or simply curious about what lies ahead, this workshop offers a meaningful space to explore resilience, honor your story, and envision your future with renewed clarity. Participants will leave with writing pieces, tools for emotional coping, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of growing older.

Workshop Objectives

  • Discuss attitudes and beliefs about younger and older age groups.
  • Identify factors that influence outcomes in older age.
  • Learn about the theory of gerotranscendence.
  • Explore the wisdom you have gained during your life.
