Aging well is a priority for many older adults and their families. They want practical tools and knowledge to maintain a high quality of life as they age. These workshops will be held in February, March, and April via Zoom, making it easy for anyone with internet access to join. For those without technology, local organizations are invited to host watch parties.

Many older adults take several medications to manage health conditions, but taking multiple medications can sometimes increase the risk of side effects, falls, confusion, or other health concerns. This webinar provides a general overview of medication use in older age, including what polypharmacy means and how deprescribing — the careful and planned reduction of medications — can help improve safety and quality of life.

Objectives

  • Gain a basic understanding of what polypharmacy is
  • Learn what deprescribing means and how it differs from stopping medications on one’s own.
  • Recognize common risks with taking multiple medications
  • Understand the importance of regular medication review.

Speaker

Teri Undem, Ph.D., R.Ph., is Director of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences and a faculty member in the School of Pharmacy within the College of Health and Human Sciences at North Dakota State University
