BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is pleased to welcome Graig Reicks as the new Weed Ecology Field Specialist.

In his role, Reicks will provide guidance for weed management in specialty crops, pastures and rangelands, organic systems, lawns/gardens and public right-of-ways. He is based in Brookings.

“Graig brings close to 20 years’ worth of experience in agriculture research at South Dakota State University. He has a broad knowledge of weed management, cover crops and crop production,” said Sandy Smart, SDSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Senior Program Leader and professor. “Graig brings needed expertise to our extension team and will boost our ability to meet the needs of growers, agricultural specialists and stakeholders in South Dakota and the surrounding region.”

Reicks has his doctorate in plant science from SDSU and has been a research associate in SDSU’s Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science since 2007. His experience includes working with South Dakota farmers to conduct on-farm research and managing the IR-4 pesticide testing program for specialty crops, a federally funded project that collects data for pesticide registration.

“I had a good balance of soils, weeds, and precision ag in that position,” Reicks said. “I’ve worked largely with corn and soybeans for the past 18 years, so expanding my horizons into different cropping systems will be interesting.”
