BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is working with Nebraska Extension and North Dakota State University Extension to offer a program to prepare you to ask another person to serve as your fiduciary for legal and financial matters.
The program, called “Organize this: Legal and financial must-haves”, features four, 90-minute-long sessions about a variety of topics, including legal situations/outcomes related to family caregiving and end-of-life (e.g., incapacitation, dying intestate), duties and responsibilities of a fiduciary, relevant documents and information, organization strategies, security issues, and options for professional support.
“We know that navigating this topic can feel overwhelming — there’s so much to understand. That’s why we’re committed to creating a supportive learning environment where you can turn your plans into action,” said Leacey Brown, SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialist.
Held online via Zoom, the sessions are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. CST on Jan. 13, April 14, July 14 and Oct. 13, 2026, with homework between each meeting designed to help you work through organizational tasks and learn additional information (e.g., how to replace important documents). Participants will be able to decide which organizational tasks are right for their specific situations.
Registration is required by Dec. 19, 2025, and is $50. The fee covers all materials and handouts that will be mailed to participants. To register, visit SDSU Extension Events page and search “organize this”.
“Join a supportive community where you’ll connect with others walking similar paths. Our guest speakers bring insight and expertise to guide you, and each session is designed to help you grow in confidence and clarity,” Brown said. “You’ll never feel like you’re tackling this alone—we’re in it together.”
Technical support will be available for anyone who is new to using Zoom. If you are unable to afford the $50 fee, there is a scholarship available.
For more information or to inquire about a scholarship, contact Leacey Brown, SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialist.
