BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is hosting a seasonal challenge called Spring Into Step to encourage physical activity.
Spring Into Step is a virtual physical activity challenge for all South Dakotans that will last the entire month of May 2026. It is free to participate, but registration is required. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “spring”.
Participants will track their minutes of physical activity each day in May and submit those minutes at the end of the challenge. All participants will receive a small thank you and the top achievers will receive an additional prize. Remaining participants will be entered into a drawing for a prize, as well.
Erin Hallenbeck, SDSU Extension Health and Physical Activity Field Specialist, said physical activity is important for overall health and this is the perfect time of year to start adding in more outdoor activities.
“We’re excited to bring back Spring Into Step as a fun and motivating way to help people get moving after a long winter,” Hallenbeck said. “Spring is a great time for a fresh start. Longer days and warmer weather make it easier to be active and re-establish healthy habits.”
Throughout May, participants will receive additional support, including weekly encouragement emails and ideas for activity to keep them moving. There will also be a weekly nutrition tip and challenge to promote overall wellness, helping participants focus on both movement and healthy eating.
Physical activity can include everyday activities like walking, gardening, dancing or cleaning. For beginners, Hallenbeck said even small lifestyle choices can lead to big changes.
“The challenge is a great opportunity for participants to build consistency, try something new and feel supported along the way,” she said.
