SDSU Extension to host Financial Fireside Chats webinar series

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension will host a series of webinars to help people build their financial literacy and confidence. 

Financial Fireside Chats is a free series of webinars every Tuesday for six weeks that tackles timely topics designed to promote financial well-being for participants of all ages. 

Sessions are from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. CST online via Zoom on March 11, 18, 25 and April 1, 8 and 15, 2025. Participants can register for one or multiple sessions. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “fireside”. 

Topics include preparing for climate-related financial risks to understanding Medicare options, managing household tasks, avoiding fraud, developing savings strategies and navigating the changing landscape of student loan repayment.

"Financial well-being is closely tied to financial literacy," said Lorna Saboe-Wounded Head, SDSU Extension Family Resource Management Field Specialist. "Our goal is to equip participants with practical knowledge and tools they can use to confidently manage their financial resources."

The series will start on March 11 with 52 ways to climate-proof your finances, which will guide participants on financially preparing for unexpected weather events. Other session topics are: 

  • March 18 – Making decisions about Medicare. Understand key decisions and options as participants prepare for Medicare eligibility.
  • March 25 – Fair play: solutions for when you have too much to do. Explore a system for dividing household responsibilities and fostering family collaboration on tasks.
  • April 1 – Protecting your life from fraud and scams. Learn how to identify fraudulent behaviors and strategies to reduce your risk of becoming a victim.
  • April 8 – Fool-proof strategies to save money. Discover three effective strategies to adjust spending habits and meet your financial savings goals.
  • April 15 – Student loan repayment. Learn the latest significant changes in student loan repayment plans, application processes and management tips.
