SDSU Extension co-hosting legal and financial webinar for deaf individuals

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is working with Nebraska Extension and North Dakota State University Extension to host the Organize This: Legal and Financial Must-Haves series for deaf individuals.

The program’s goal is to prepare participants to ask another person to serve as their fiduciary for legal and financial matters. This series is tailored to meet the needs of those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Interpreters and captioning will be provided to ensure full participation.

Sessions are from 4 to 5:30 p.m. CST on Jan. 15, April 16, July 16 and Oct. 15, 2026, at the SDSU Extension Sioux Falls Regional Center. Registration is $25 and is required by Jan. 12, 2026. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Event page.

There will be four 90-minute sessions with homework between each meeting designed to help participants work through organizational tasks and learn additional information, such as how to replace important documents. Participants will be able to decide which organizational tasks are right for their situations.

Over a 10-month period, participants will learn about various topics, including legal situations/outcomes related to family caregiving and end-of-life, such as incapacitation and dying intestate; duties and responsibilities of a fiduciary; relevant documents and information; organization strategies; security issues; and options for professional support.

Scholarships are available for those unable to afford the $25 fee. For more information, contact Lorna Wounded Head, SDSU Extension Family Resource Management Field Specialist.
