Join the SDSU Native Plant Initiative at the Education Garden (2900 Canyon Lake Dr, Rapid City, SD 57702) on June 5 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. for an evening Native Plant Expo. Native plants grown by SDSU students using local seed will be available for sale, along with Extension materials and handouts.
SDSU faculty, SDSU Extension Field Specialists, and students will be available to answer questions about native plants. Short presentations will cover native seed storage, seed source selection, the performance of local, northern, and southern seed sources in South Dakota, the cost-benefit of using plugs versus seeds, and native plants that support birds. Many themed plant packs will be available, as well as individual species. Look for our Bad Soils Pack, with plants that do well in harsh soil conditions; the Winter Birdscape Pack, with plants that support birds through the winter; and the Grass Pack, with native grasses for texture, structure, and habitat.
