BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is taking applications for its new program that will certify volunteers to provide personal finance workshops.
Over 10 weeks, the Money Mentor Volunteer program will help South Dakotans learn how to facilitate personal finance educational programming. Those who successfully complete the program will be certified to lead personal finance workshops in communities and to provide one-on-one financial education.
The program includes approximately 15 hours of individual training and 15 hours of online training via Zoom. The 90-minute Zoom training sessions start at 6:30 p.m. CST on March 4. Registration is $50 per person and is required by Feb. 17. To apply, visit the SDSU Extension Money Mentors page.
“This financial empowerment program is designed to help consumers meet their financial goals by increasing their knowledge, skills and resources,” said Lorna Saboe-Wounded Head, SDSU Extension Family Resource Management Field Specialist. “Community volunteers are the best resources to provide this service because they know the needs of the individuals and families.”
Wounded Head said personal finance education is needed for all income levels in an ever-evolving economy. Drawing on the Your Money Your Goals toolkit developed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, mentors will become a network of trained volunteers who can target the personal finance knowledge needs of their communities through individual and group education.
