SDSU Extension hosts Sustaining the Legacy Conference

BROOKINGS, S.D. – SDSU Extension will host the next Sustaining the Legacy program June 7-8, 2023, at the Dakota Lodge in Lemmon, South Dakota.

Sustaining the Legacy has been the SDSU Extension farm and ranch estate planning and transition program since 2006. Over the years, the program has been hosted as multi-day events and large single-day conferences providing important information to producers across the state. The Lemmon Area Charitable Economic Development Corporation is a sponsor of the June event.

The conference is designed for farming and ranching families at all stages of transitioning their operations. Participants will learn methods to pass on farm and ranch assets and businesses and provide a financial inheritance to non-farming and ranching children. Topics include:

•    Trusts
•    Business structures, Limited Liability Company, Limited Liability Limited Partnerships and corporations
•    Life insurance
•    Wills and probate
•    Titling property
•    Contracts
•    Retirement planning for landowners
•    How to access retirement benefits (Medicare, Social Security)
•    Elder and end-of-life care planning

Estate planning and transition attorneys, in addition to other industry experts, will present the material.

“We are limiting participation to create an interactive learning environment to maximize impact for conference attendees,” said Heather Gessner, SDSU Extension Livestock Business Management Field Specialist.

Registration is limited to 40 participants. Early registration is $50 and includes meals and program materials for up to four people per farm or ranch operation through May 24. Registration will increase to $60 after May 24, and will remain open until June 7 or until all seats have been filled.
