BROOKINGS, S.D. – More than 75 youth and supporters enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about state history and government during the 2026 4-H Capitol Day on Feb. 20.
Hosted by South Dakota State University Extension 4-H, the annual event provides the chance for 4-H youth, volunteers and staff to spend a day at the South Dakota Capitol, interact with state legislators and employees and tour the historic Capitol building.
Throughout the day, attendees joined public bill committee hearings, took Capitol tours led by 4-H staff, engaged in outdoor education and STEM hands-on learning experiences and enjoyed an ice cream social with elected officials.
4-H Ambassadors also had the opportunity to shadow a legislator throughout the day, and all attendees could participate in an interactive scavenger hunt where they were tasked with learning about South Dakota’s history and the Capitol complex.
Jillian Knippling and Abby Lewis, Moody County 4-H members, won the scavenger hunt, which included directives like taking pictures with particular statues or finding specific building features.
“It kept me very engaged throughout the whole day. I got to go around and have fun and learn all day,” Knippling said. “It was an amazing day.”
For Knippling, who had never attended 4-H Capitol Day before, it was a fun and educational way to learn about the Capitol and interact with different people. Her favorite part of the scavenger hunt was being directed to visit with state employees, which led her to the financial auditing department.
“We were able to talk to someone who works in the Capitol every day, and ask questions about what they do,” Knippling said. “It was lovely talking to her.”
