Live fire training for landowners planned for May 20

The location for this event has been changed from Oak Lake to the Animal Science building on the South Dakota State University campus.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – There will be a live prescribed fire training for landowners and agency officials on May 20, 2025, in room 126 of the SDSU Animal Science Complex (1097 N. Campus Drive, Brookings, SD 57007). 

The training is hosted by South Dakota State University Extension in partnership with the South Dakota Grassland Coalition, South Dakota Natural Resources Conservation Service, Audubon Great Plains, The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other partner organizations. 

This training is free to attend, but registration is required. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “fire”. Registered participants will receive an email with full event information. 

Participants must complete a classroom session before participating in the live fire training. Prior training sessions or the morning session on May 20 qualify. 

Held from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., the day will include classroom instruction in the morning and hands-on training with equipment during a live burn in the afternoon. There will orientation/training on burn unit design and preparation, firebreak establishment techniques, legalities, understanding weather, communications, safety and other important topics.
