Effective marketing and risk management techniques rely on benchmarks. Basis, the difference between a cash price and a futures price, is one such benchmark for those in the cattle industry. Basis levels reflect transportation costs from the cash location to where the underlying futures contract settles. Basis levels also reflect any quality differences in the cash price and the futures contract specifications.
