4-H Buddies: A South Dakota 4-H Mentor Guidebook

Written collaboratively by Jenae Hansen-Gross; Ron Frederick; Lauren Hollenbeck, former SDSU Extension 4-H Educator - Clay & Union Counties; Jodi Loehrer; Ann Price; Cailey Sime; Nathan Skadsen; and Becca Tuller.

Program Background

The South Dakota 4-H Mentor program guidelines and resources were created following a bill passed during the 2021 South Dakota 4-H Legislature program. The idea was supported by the 4-H Program Director and assigned to the Positive Youth Development Outcome team. This guideline is a product of a youth led initiative that addresses an identified need in our 4-H programming.

Program Overview:

The 4-H Buddies Program is designed to pair a 4-H member ages 8-12 or a first time 4-H member with a knowledgeable 4-H mentor, based on their project interests. The 4-H mentor will help their Buddy navigate the world of 4-H. Some Buddies may be new to 4-H and need general help and guidance to have a successful year, other Buddies may want to learn about a new project area and need a mentor to start on the right foot.
