Native Plants to Know: Small-Flowered Columbine (Aquilegia brevistyla)

Aquilegia brevistyla, or small-flowered columbine, is a native, perennial, herbaceous plant in the Ranunculaceae (buttercup family) that grows in cool, shaded, canyons in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

SDSU Extension occupies the first floor and basement of the building. Enter through the double glass doors on the south side of the building. 

  • Classroom: There is a classroom in the basement with seating for about 80 that is available to reserve.
  • Commercial Applicator Testing: Tests are offered in four-hour time blocks, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 1:00-5:00 p.m. Call to schedule an appointment.
  • Livestock Water Testing: On-site livestock water testing services are offered at this location.

The office is located on Sixth Avenue on the north side of a building complex that includes the Five Counties Nursing Home. The SDSU Extension Entrance faces Sixth Street, and parking is available on the north side of the building or along Sixth Street.

  • Commercial Applicator Testing: Tests are offered in four-hour time blocks, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 1:00-5:00 p.m. Call to schedule an appointment.
  • Livestock Water Testing: On-site livestock water testing services is offered at this location.

The office is located inside the Nordby Trades Center on the Mitchell Technical Institute campus. When entering the parking lot, look for the sign that says SDSU Extension parking. Enter Nordby through the main double doors and immediately turn left to find the SDSU Extension offices (look for the sign).

  • Classroom: There is a conference room with enough seating for 10 people, and a smart classroom with enough for 42. Rooms are available to rent for full or half-days. Rental rates are available for full or half days. It is $50 for a half day without technology or $75 with technology; a full day without technology is $100 or $150 with technology.
  • Commercial Applicator Testing: Tests are offered in four-hour time blocks, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 1:00-5:00 p.m. Call to schedule an appointment.
  • Livestock Water Testing: On-site livestock water testing services is offered at this location.

The office is located on Missouri Avenue in a residential area along the Missouri River, across from the Steamboat Park amphitheater. SDSU Extension’s offices are on the first floor of a shared office space.

  • Classroom: There is a smart classroom with seating for 30 and a conference room with seating for up to 15 that are available to rent. Rental rates are available for full or half days. It is $50 for a half day without technology or $75 with technology; a full day without technology is $100 or $150 with technology.
  • Commercial Applicator Testing: Tests are offered in four-hour time blocks, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 1:00-5:00 p.m. Call to schedule an appointment.

The office is located in Suite 103 of 4101 W. 38th St. The building also houses Minnehaha County 4-H, South Dakota School for the Deaf and the South Dakota Department of Health. SDSU Extension has its own entrance on the southeast corner of the building, across from the Best Western Empire Towers.
