BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension 4-H is excited to offer two summer camp programs in the Black Hills, including a new Teen Wilderness Camp.
Both camps are at Storm Mountain Center, a wilderness and camp retreat about 20 miles southwest of Rapid City. They are $250 per person, and registration is required. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “camp”.
The new Teen Wilderness Camp is from May 31 to June 3, 2026, and is for ages 13-17. Designed as an introductory backpacking camp, youth will learn “Leave No Trace” principles, navigation, equipment use and maintenance, outdoor cooking and other fundamentals.
On the second night, there will be an overnight backpacking trip. Tents, backpacks and cooking utensils are all provided; campers are welcome to bring their own gear if they wish. Campers can expect moderate physical activity on the hike to the campsite with backpacks weighing up to 20 pounds.
“Campers should come excited to sleep in a tent, cook their own food and hike through the beauty of the Black Hills,” said Kyle Beach, SDSU Extension Program Manager, Regional Youth Educator.
The camp for youth age 8-12 is from June 14-17, 2026, and is a traditional overnight camp experience with campers sleeping in cabins. During the day, there will be a mix of guided programs like fire building and archery, and free time to enjoy swimming and outdoor games. Evenings will include campfires, s’mores and a talent show.
