BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension 4-H Shooting Sports is pleased to announce the 2024 State Shooting Sports Scholarship winners.
Six youths in the shooting sports program will receive scholarships funded through entrance fees paid at the shooting sports state match. A committee of volunteers reviews the applicants and selects the top candidates.
The 2024 4-H scholarship recipients are:
Nicolette Hoffman, Douglas County ($1,000) – Hoffman plans to attend Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell to major in psychology. Hoffman has been very active in 4-H throughout the years and has represented 4-H as a Shooting Sports Ambassador as well as a State 4-H Ambassador. Hoffman has participated in many shooting sports disciplines and last year was a member of the South Dakota 4-H .22 Rifle team at nationals in Grand Island, Nebraska, where she placed first in 3-position, fourth in Civilian Marksmanship Program, and sixth in aggregate. Hoffman served two terms as a State 4-H Ambassador and on the planning committee for the SkillsX conference.
Jack Anderson, Tripp County ($750) – Anderson graduated from Colome High School and will be attending Mitchell Technical College to pursue a certification in power line construction and maintenance as well as substation utilities technology. Anderson has been a 4-H Shooting Sports member since he was 9 years old. He has participated in several disciplines, shotgun being his favorite. Anderson has competed at the county and state level and was a member of the SDSU Extension 4-H Shotgun team at nationals in 2023.
Savanah Hendricks, Jones County ($750) – Hendricks graduated from Jones County High School and will attend SDSU to major in criminology with a minor in military science. She also plans to participate in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps on campus. Her passion for law and politics started when she decided to pursue the Citizenship Pin. As part of her efforts, Hendricks successfully petitioned the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks to change the youth pheasant season from five days to nine. Hendricks also enjoys 4-H Shooting Sports and has participated in five disciplines over the last nine years.
Tristen Host, Jones County ($500) – Host graduated from Jones County High School and will attend SDSU in the fall for mechanical engineering. Host has been a 4-H Shooting Sports member for 10 years. He started with BB gun and added archery the following year. Host has qualified for state every year in archery, placing as high as second. His favorite archery discipline is CWOS-R (compound without sights with release).
Kyle Sanders, Fall River County ($500) – Sanders graduated from Hot Springs High School and plans to attend Mitchell Technical Institute for electrical construction and maintenance. Sanders has participated in 4-H Shooting Sports with BB gun, air pistol and shotgun. Sanders also joined his high school’s trapshooting team and has excelled in the program.
Tessa Henderson, Union County ($500) – Henderson graduated from Beresford High School and plans to attend SDSU to study communications and advertising. Henderson began participating in the 4-H Shooting Sports program when she was 8. Starting with archery and BB gun, she has added several other disciplines in the last 10 years and has participated in the state competition. Henderson has also enjoyed participating in the rabbit project.
