Nathania Knight Awarded South Dakota State University’s 2020 Outstanding Professional Award

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Nathania Knight has been awarded the 2020 Outstanding Professional Award by the South Dakota State University Professional Staff Advisory Council. The Outstanding Professional award recognizes professional staff members who strive to exemplify South Dakota State University’s core values as a land-grant institution. 

Nathania Knight serves as an SDSU Extension Family and Community Health Associate. Knight began her career with SDSU Extension as a nutrition paraprofessional and through dedication has become an SDSU Extension Associate. 

Knight serves as the SDSU Extension representative to Tribal Offices on the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Indian Reservations. Her professionalism and persistence on all commitments has increased the reputation of SDSU Extension and expanded outreach efforts in those communities.

Knight has co-led a state-wide implementation of the Faithful Families Program, part of the SDSU Extension Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) program. She has increased culturally appropriate resources for SDSU Extension by providing a voice translation of a storybook into the traditional Lakota language. 

Knight also worked on the Double-Up Dakota Bucks program which worked with local grocery and convenience stores to provide healthier retail options in certain locations. She helps organize community gardens that produce several thousand pounds of produce each year. Knight also serves as a mentor and role model for current paraprofessionals who strive to advance their careers with SDSU Extension as she has.
