BROOKINGS, S.D. - SDSU Extension, South Dakota Sheep Growers Association (SDSGA) and industry partners are hosting Sheep Day at the Black Hills Stock Show, Thursday, January 31 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Kjerstad Event Center, Rapid City (915 Centre St).

“Our goal is to provide a complete sheep industry experience for all attendees. Whether or not they are sheep producers will not matter,” said David Ollila, SDSU Extension Sheep Field Specialist.

Ollila explained that because 20 percent of all sheep in the United States are raised in the Northern Plains states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Nebraska, there is a long tradition of sheep production among ranch families in this region. And, a lot of the sheep industry’s infrastructure can be found in these states, including: sheep producers, professional sheep shearers, sheep dog trainers, wool warehouses, livestock auctions marketing lamb, feedlots and some small wool mills and lamb harvesting plants.
