BROOKINGS, S.D. – SDSU Extension is excited to offer Fit & Strong, an evidence-based physical activity program developed by researchers at the University of Illinois. The first Fit & Strong class will begin in Brookings March 12, 2019. Fit & Strong will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 2-3:30 p.m. until May 30 at First Lutheran Church (337 8th St.).
“Fit & Strong combines flexibility, strength training and aerobic walking with health education for sustained behavior change among older adults.”
A twelve-week program, Fit & Strong has been shown to help individuals:
- Maintain independent functioning
- Reduce and manage arthritis symptoms
- Learn a variety of exercises while gradually increasing the frequency, duration and intensity of exercise over time
The program is open to all individuals, with a specific focus on older adults experiencing lower-extremity joint pain.
“Each Fit & Strong session will include stretching, balance, range of motion, endurance and resistance exercises focused on the lower extremities. Participants will learn problem-solving and other self-management techniques,” said Hope Kleine, SDSU Extension Health Education Field Specialist.
