BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota 4-H members received national recognition during the 2018 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships held in Grand Island, Neb. June 24-29.
Of the 606 youth from across the country who competed at this year's championships, 35 were South Dakota 4-H members who qualified during the 2018 4-H Spring Shoot in Pierre and the 2017 4-H Fall Shoot in Mitchell.
The South Dakota teams to receive national recognition include:
Compound Archery placed fourth overall, first in the FITA round and Field portions of the competition. The team had 10 ten finishers throughout the week. In the FITA portion of the contest individuals recognized include: second place, Wade McClanahan, Tripp County; third place, Hannah Bartos, Bon Homme County and ninth place, Carter Trefz, Faulk County. In the Field portion of the contest individuals recognized include: first place, Wade McClanahan and seventh place, Hailey Johnson, Bon Homme County. Scott Perry coached the team. He is a volunteer Archery instructor from Beadle County.
Air Pistol placed fourth overall and was recognized for placing in the top four in each phase of the competition. Three team members were recognized individually for placing in the top 10 of the various phases of the competition, including: sixth place in Rapid Fire, Evan Ohlrogge, Sanborn County; 10th place in the Silhouette, Rose Smith, Lawrence County and fifth place in the Slow Fire, Cloe Swanson, Minnehaha County. Audrey Kneen of Sanborn County coached the team.
Air Rifle placed third in Standing portion of the competition. Team member, Cassandra Ryckman, Hughes County placed third overall. Ryckman placed ninth in 3-P and eighth in Silhouette. Arthur Kneen, Sanborn County volunteer, coached the team.
22 Pistol Parker Baker, Tripp County placed seventh in Camp Perry.
Muzzleloading Stran Kruse, Deuel County placed 10th in 50 Yard Bullseye.
All states represented at the 2018 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships, compete for a sweepstakes award in each discipline. South Dakota placed sixth in the Sweepstakes.
