Sustaining the Legacy @ Yankton

Thursday, January 5 - Thursday, January 19

Join SDSU Extension and industry professionals for a three-day estate planning and farm succession conference on January 5, 12, and 19, 2023 at Best Western Kelly Inn (1607 East Highway 50, Yankton, SD, 57078). Each day begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m.

No matter the size of your estate, there are wrong, right, and better ways to create a family legacy. Learning about the different methods can help farmers and ranchers create a legacy they are proud of. This legacy includes the transfer of the operation, but also the family relationships they leave behind. The agenda covers many methods used to transfer land and assets to the next generation and pass on personal property. It will also help families set goals – minimize taxes, provide for long-term care and provide equally for heirs while continuing to operate.

This year’s topics include:

  • Trusts
  • Business structures, LLCs and corporations
  • Life insurance
  • Wills and probate
  • Titling property
  • Contracts
  • Retirement planning for landowners
  • How to access retirement benefits (Medicare, Social Security)
  • Goals and family meetings/communication styles
