SDSU Extension, in partnership with the South Dakota Grassland Coalition, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and others will host a two-day prescribed fire workshop tailored to private landowners April 25-26 in Astoria. An introductory workshop will take place on April 25 at the SDSU Oak Lake Field Station (19862 483rd Ave., Astoria, SD), followed by an advanced training day offered on April 26 for those who completed the first-day course (or a previous Landowner Prescribed Fire Introductory Class) and who want additional hands-on training.
April 25 - Introductory Workshop

The first-day introductory workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. CDT at the SDSU Oak Lake Field Station. Training will focus on basic training topics related to prescribed fire on private land. Landowners will work directly with experienced fire professionals throughout the day.

- 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - Classroom training. Topics include:
- Fire planning and design
- Goals, objectives, and safety
- Ecology and weather
- Communications
- Burning USDA Conservation Reserve Program and other programs
- 12:00 to 12:30 pm. - Lunch (on your own)
- 12:30 to 6:30 pm. - Field training. Topics include:
- Fire break preparation
- Weather and fuel types
- Burn techniques and safety
- Personal protective/fire equipment training
- Live fire skills and burning
April 26 - Advanced Workshop

The second-day advanced workshop will cover tree control and burning on CRP land. It will be offered for those students who complete the day-one introductory workshop or those who previously completed a 2023 Landowner Prescribed Fire Introductory Class. Advanced days will be a full field day, where students will plan and assist in implementation of a complete prescribed burn under the direction of instructors.

All workshops are free of charge. Pre-registration is highly encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.
