Caregiver Learning Workshops: Estate and Elder Law Planning

NDSU Extension and SDSU Extension will host a free virtual Caregiver Learning Workshop about estate and elder law planning on February 16, 2023, starting at 12:00 p.m. CST (11:00 a.m. MT).

Family caregivers face many challenges and often do not know where to turn for help. To help connect family caregivers with the information and services they need, NDSU Extension and SDSU Extension collaborate to offers Caregiver Learning Workshops. This series includes three workshops offered in January, February and March. These workshops are hosted via Zoom over the lunch hour, so that working caregivers might have a better opportunity to participate. In addition to individual participants, efforts will be made to recruit individuals and organizations to host watch parties so that individuals without access to the internet can watch the workshops.

Workshop Summary

This presentation will cover estate planning and elder law tools that can help you get your ducks in a row. We will focus on tools that enable caregivers to handle issues that arise, from paying bills to making medical decisions. We will discuss ways to create a plan that ensures an individual’s wishes are carried out, both during any incapacity and on death. We will also cover the consequences of failing to put together a plan ahead of time and the options that remain when emergencies arise.

Workshop Objectives

  1. Understand how powers of attorney and living wills can help a caregiver provide needed aid.
  2. Know what probate is and the purpose of a will.
  3. Understand some of the pitfalls that arise when trying to avoid probate.
