NDSU Extension and SDSU Extension will host a free online Aging Well Workshop covering strategies to stay in your home longer on March 21 at 10:00 a.m. CST (9:00 a.m. MT).

Aging well is a high priority for many older people and their families. They want to learn what they need to have a high quality of life when they grow older. NDSU Extension and SDSU Extension are collaborating to offer Aging Well Workshops so individuals and families can learn about important topics related to aging. This series includes three workshops offered in January, February and March. The workshops are hosted via Zoom so anyone with technology and internet access can participate. To reach those who do not have technology and internet, organizations are also being recruited to host watch parties. These workshops will be recorded and posted online for a short period of time (60 days following each workshop).

How To Stay In Your Home Longer Workshop

Presented by Leacey E. Brown, SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialist; and Jane Strommen, NDSU Extension Gerontology State Specialist.

Summary

The design of the home is a critical part of aging in place. Many older people are living in homes with small bathrooms, narrow halls/doors, and other features that become barriers during later life decline. For this reason, they need home modifications to remain in the home long-term. This workshop will describe design elements in your home that can make it easier or harder for you to age in place. You will also learn ideas about renovations or changes to make to age in place. Financing options will also be included during the session. Finally, you will learn about a group in North Dakota and South Dakota working to raise awareness about how this issue is affecting individuals and families.

Objectives

  • Learn structural features of a home that make aging in place easier.
  • Learn about home modifications and how they help you to age in place.
  • Learn about strategies to finance modifications.
