AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program in which AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to a full-time one-year term of service to help fight poverty across the nation. President Johnson started the VISTA program in 1964 and in 1993 VISTA joined the AmeriCorps network of programs. The AmeriCorps VISTA program has been combating poverty across the nation for over 50 years.

The SDSU Extension AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and motivated to help alleviate poverty across the state of South Dakota. They join more than 8,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members across the country all serving towards the same goal of ending poverty. SDSU Extension AmeriCorps VISTA members provide capacity building efforts in the areas of gerontology, tribal local foods, family resource management, health outreach, nutrition education, and other SDSU Extension programs.

Who can apply?

  • AmeriCorps VISTA member must be 18 and over.
  • AmeriCorps VISTA service is open to U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals, Lawful Permanent Residents and persons legally residing in a state that have one of the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, or temporary protected status.
